I Rule My Mind, Which I Alone Must Rule

The inmates are running the asylum. Every day, hour, minute the craziness and assaults on reason, compassion, common decency and mutual respect grow more egregious and are treated as the new normal. I, and those of you reading this, do not want that to continue. But what to do? To react with fear, anger and attack – to fight fire with fire – feels good for a moment, but ultimately only continues the downward spiral. So, what to do?

It’s kind of like taking scissors from a child, not exactly like, but kind of like. I take the scissors, not with hate and condemnation, but with loving common sense. (Oh, how I wish I could really do this!) The child is the ideals of compassion, inclusivity, the rule of law, mutual respect. The scissors are blame, name calling and fear. I want to act to take the scissors away without harming the child.

Each day, hour, and minute – whenever I become aware the craziness and assaults on reason, compassion, common decency and mutual respect grow more egregious, I can mindfully choose not to treat them as the new normal. Instead I can rule my mind, which I alone must rule and choose to be aware that the essence of all things is not in the thing itself but in the spirit behind the thing. I can respond to the provocation of the moment by choosing to go within and be guided in what to feel, say and do by mySelf, instead of myself.  I can also know that perhaps, all this nastiness is a long overdue shake out and things will return to a more descent normal after the elections in November.
