More reactions to Trump Care:

Surgeons have decided to wash their hands of the whole thing and the internists claimed it would indeed be a bitter pill to swallow. While plastic surgeons opined that this later proposal would put a whole new face on the matter.

More physician reactions to Trump Care:

Pathologists yelled, “Over my dead body!” while the pediatricians said, “Oh, grow up!” The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it.

It’s impossible to be unhappy and grateful at the same time.
Too often an ungracious and unappreciative attitude seems justified. Once in awhile, sure. But all the time, unhealthy.
Such an attitude is neither natural nor necessary. We’re always free to choose our reaction to things. We choose to be happy or unhappy. But we can’t choose both at the same time.

Mindful Monday

I just posted something similar to this on Fareed Zakaria’s Facebook page and it’s being “reviewed”.

Dear Fareed, on your excellent show yesterday, when you were interviewing Christa Vreeland, Canada’s Foreign Minister, you did what you and most pundits do, you used the phrase, “the American people.” I know TV requires short punchy phrases but you’re usually more conscientious and accurate.
49% of the American people chose not to vote. Half of those that voted, voted for Hillary and she won the popular vote by 3 million. That means that less than half voted for Trump. Quite a bit less than the phrase, “the American people” would suggest. It would benefit the public interest, if you and other pundits chose to take the extra moments to describe (as above) what really happened.

The American Medical Association has weighed in on Trump Care, the proposed ‘reform’ of the American Health Care Act:

The allergists were in favor of scratching it but, the dermatologists advised not to make any rash decisions.

The gastroenterologists had a gut feeling about it but the neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve.

Meanwhile, obstetricians felt certain Republicans were laboring under a misconception, while the ophthalmologists considered them shortsighted.

The Trump Effect

Posted by on Jun 7, 2017 in News | Comments Off on The Trump Effect

The Trump Effect

A few months ago it was reported that the President of the United States quoted his misunderstanding of a report on Fox (or an erroneous Fox report) about terrorism in Sweden. Two days later, there were riots in a predominantly Muslim suburb of Stockholm. That’s the Trump effect.

Why did the President of the United States rely on Fox for his information? Why not take advantage of the billions the USA spends on professional intelligence and get the correct facts on Sweden?

Does he really believe the US intelligence community dislikes him so much that their information is deliberately misleading? Perhaps.

This with Fox brings up another interesting inconsistency in the President’s thought processes. While he’s labeled the “media” as liars and enemies of the people, he relies on Fox and Breitbart. Aren’t they media, too?

Keeping Campaign Promises

Posted by on Jun 5, 2017 in News | Comments Off on Keeping Campaign Promises

Keeping Campaign Promises

Keeping campaign promises is usually a good thing, even a rare thing.

But what if the winner was elected by a minority, not a majority? And what if many of those that voted for the winner were angry, fearful and unknowledgeable?
What if in fact, the majority voted for someone and something else?
Would keeping campaign promises to the angry, frightened ignorant minority be best for the majority?

As the current President of the United States and his minions go about their work, they often justify the pain and disruption they’re causing by saying they’re keeping their campaign promises. Those that support democracy but didn’t vote for this Administration are supposed to be respectful of that and even supportive.

Normally, that would be correct. But the way this Administration was elected and what it is doing is not normal, nor even in the best interests of the majority of voters in the United States of America.

The other candidate won the election by nearly 3,000,000 votes. 49% of those eligible to vote, didn’t. That means that the Administration now keeping its campaign promises is keeping its promises to approximately 25% of the electorate, many of whom voted from fear, anger and ignorance.

Do we want these campaign promises to be kept? Are they good for the Nation and the world? This is still a democracy. Make your voice heard. Tell your Congress person. Get organized and vote for a change in the mid-term election.

Quo Vadis?

Posted by on Jun 2, 2017 in News | Comments Off on Quo Vadis?

What’s Next…War?

There seems to be a fundamental disconnect between governing and voting. Voters don’t seem to understand that their choices actually effect their lives. For many voters, elections have become sports events and the media covers them as such. As in a sport event, victory is everything and the contest ends with victory. That’s not true in elections. Little thought is given to what happens after elections when the victors make decisions about whether voters get health care or have clean water and air.

It wasn’t always this way. Voters used to understand what electing people like Scott, Rubio and Trump meant to their welfare. Now the sports event/game mentality dominates. How sad, how unfortunate. Perhaps that attitude will change. As one trapped in the downward spiral, who has always understood what electing ideologue Republicans meant to real life, I speak for myself and those like me and pray that my brothers and sisters will awaken and give up the sports metaphor.

Hillary got 3,000,000 million more votes than Trump. 49% of those eligible to vote, didn’t. That means because of our flawed system, half of 51% or perhaps 26% voted for Republicans. That means 74% of the people are being ruled by a radical, ideological group of sports fans seemingly without a clue about what’s in their own best interests and the interests of the US and the world.

The time for America first and make America great again are long past. Coal is never coming back. Neither is rugged individualism. A flag lapel pin is no guarantee of true patriotism. Reality requires a community of nations working together to save an endangered planet. Instead of God bless America, let’s pray that God saves America from itself.

Wise Wednesday

Our task is not to seek for love, but to seek and find all the barriers we have built to it within us.
Have you seen pictures and videos of how pre-school children of all races and sexes play happily together and cry when a playmate cries or is hurt?
What does that tell you?
It tells me that joy, love and compassion are natural human qualities and that fear, anger and hate are not.
Our task if we would have a world that works for everyone and everything is not to seek for love, but to seek and find all the barriers we have built to it within us.

Memorial Day on Mindful Monday

Posted by on May 29, 2017 in News | Comments Off on Memorial Day on Mindful Monday

Memorial Day, Veterans Day – days set aside for grilling, drinking and sales – holidays for us to come together as a Nation and reflect on what War is for. To remember John Wayne, who never served, and Jimmy Stewart who did.

Now, with the exception of a few, none of our elected leaders have experienced the sheer terror of combat, the smell of rotten flesh, the sight of severed body parts. For these, war is an abstraction, a John Wayne movie, not to be experienced but to be watched in a comfortable chair. A video game.

My brothers and sisters please, when and if we choose war, let’s do so mindfully, asking would I want my flesh or that of a loved one to be scalded and torn, to feel pain for the rest of my life?

There are so many other ways to achieve our nation’s ideals that are more consistent with them. “Thank you for your service,” and a free meal at The Golden Coral, or an upgrade to First Class, are inadequate ways to make up for the guilt of sending people, even volunteers, to war.

22 vets and active duty are committing suicide every day.

And what have we done with the peace these people have won, besides drinking, grilling, sales and Dancing With The Stars?

Are we less paranoid, less motivated by fear, prejudice and loathing? Have we gladly and eagerly extended our ideals to people of all faiths and colors? Do we now stand up to alternative facts, bold face lies and demonizing one another?

As a nation we have much to be grateful for. We used to know that and act accordingly. We can again. We used to share our ideals and treasure. We can again. We didn’t used to be so mean spirited and tight fisted. Perhaps if we return to living from our inherent generosity, compassion and ideals our plagues of drug and alcohol addiction and even our grid locked political discourse might be managed.

Wise Wednesday

The Universe doesn’t judge our desires.
Like a mirror, it’s neutral, reflecting back our own judgements.
If I feel guilt over a thought or action, I’ll feel a desire for punishment and the Universe will manifest some form of what I consider punishment in my experience.
If I feel inspiration and enthusiasm about a thought or action, the Universe will bring joy and success in my experience as I follow the inspiration and enthusiasm.
As the rabbi said: It is done unto us as we believe.

Mindful Monday

Margaret McLaughlin died Saturday

In her late eighties,
bent nearly double with arthritis

Margaret carried on
wheeling herself around
with a walker

Sharing herself –
her quiet courage,
wisdom and spirit.

She was a tough old bird.
Smart as a whip right up to the end.

But she wasn’t always old,
was she?

She had a life and career.

She’d been a foreign correspondent
when women weren’t doing that.

We worked on a project, together,
just the two of us

Enjoying the work and companionship

Aligned of one mind, one heart
despite the age difference.

What meaning does
Margaret’s death hold?

Perhaps,
when you see
an old person

remember

they weren’t always old
and feeble

they lived and mattered
and we can honor that

For our own sake
For we will follow soon

Sky Thru Window
