Wise Wednesday

What goes on in the minds of Trump supporters? Not the minds of political hacks like Nunes or the likes of the Kochs and Mercers. I’m wondering about the people who go to rallies and vote for Trump. I understand that millions of them are deeply threatened by the demographic shift and the loss of preeminence. That, coupled with the global economic shift are seemingly rational reasons to support Trump.

But how far does their support go? What will it take for these people to overcome their fear and anger and see Trump and the Republicans’ dark side? Seemingly nothing. There seems to be nothing Trump and his Republican enablers can do, that will cause their supporters to turn against them.

That unwillingness to stand against the darkness and fight for the light, makes me think of the traditional view of God. God allows murder, rape and war; hurricanes, tornados and tsunamis; disease, poverty and gross inequality and in spite of all that we’re supposed to love Him, honor and pray to Him. Never mind the horror and darkness. We’re supposed to be grateful for the crumbs we receive and thankful that we ourselves are not afflicted.

So it is with Trump and the Republicans. They’re chipping away at American democratic institutions, destroying environmental safeguards and the rule of law itself. They have so coarsened the quality of discourse and inflamed fear and anger, that normal political discussion is impossible. But this is alright, business as usual, for the Trump voter. For them, you have to take the good with the bad. Just like you do with God.

Mindful Monday

Judgment judges myself as much as it judges what I judge.

What judgments I make are judgments on myself because I hold on to the judgment, it remains in my mind, limiting my options. I am not free when I judge.

Discernment is different. With discernment there’s no judgment. I’m able to see things more objectively. I can allow more of the wholeness of the person, place or thing to unfold for me, instead of making a quick decision based on incomplete evidence. I see more clearly and have more options.

Releasing judgments of myself, people, places and things allows vision to take its place. Judgment blocks full understanding, appreciation and gratitude. Judgment blocks the flow of grace, joy and peace that is my (and your) natural inheritance.

Why are we here? Why were we created? What’s our purpose? What’s it all about, Alfie?

Kindness, peace and compassion. Success, glory and pleasure are ego tricks to misguide us. What if life is for us? What if we’re one with Source right now, dreaming we’re here, separated from it, and the purpose of life is to awaken and know the truth? Wouldn’t it be crazy to try to return to oneness – kindness, peace and compassion, with hatred in our hearts?

Doesn’t it make sense that only by being kind, peaceful and compassionate can we have kindness, peace and compassion? If praying more, reading holy books and writing holy blogs (like this one), singing in the choir or volunteering worked, wouldn’t we be there already? Content, not form matters. Source recognizes it’s own; knows we are one with it. Attack, fear, hatred, blame, victory are not of source, they are of ego, what separates and denies oneness, keeping us in the nightmare/dream.

What if in each second, life provides opportunities to be kind, peaceful and compassionate – even towards ourselves? What if life is for me and I can choose to be both myself and mySelf? Would a little mindfulness help?

Mindful Monday

How accurate is your GPS?

Mine’s good 90% of the time. I start out following it and if it starts seeming wrong, I let it recalibrate. What makes it seem wrong? I notice something, feel something, something doesn’t seem right. What is noticing, feeling and sensing is my inner GPS, my gut, my intuition.

As I become mindful and learn to rely on my inner GPS, my intuition, I realize it’s right more than 90% of the time. I learn to tell the difference between intuition and doubt and fear. In the beginning, intuition is often barely perceptible. There’s no urgency simply a calm, deep certainty, an inner knowing.

I learn the urgency is an ego trick to divert me from connecting with the calm, deep certainty, and inner knowing always available. The ego squawks and does its best to scare me, but with patience, practice and mindfulness, I’m able to get it out of the way and let my inner GPS guide me along the safest, quickest route to my destination.

Jason Matthews in the spay thriller the Red Sparrow, tells a joke that the Russians tell each other:

A guy parks in front of the Kremlin. A cop tells him he can’t park there because the whole government is there. The guy says, “That’s alright. I’ve got strong locks on my doors.”

Focus on what we have in common, or what keeps us apart?

The tongue can praise the wind, or warn against the storm.

The mind can love the sea, or fear the flood.

Clinging to and fearing differences, keeps us from feeling grace;

and moves us to the mind’s worst disease – the endless deciding between want and don’t want, the endless war between for and against.

With thanks to Mark Nepo.

Mindful Monday

It’s said that love is the very essence of who we are as human beings.

It may be buried under hurt, fear, anger and disappointment, but it is always there, within us, waiting to be accessed. When we forget this, we become difficult, hard and cruel. We seek for substitutes outside us. Peggy Lee’s song, ‘Is That All There Is,’ describes this experience.

Yet will love as a cool breeze on a sizzling day, a melody we can’t forget, or a smile, embrace and sustain us when we are still and mindful of our bloated nothingness.

How do you measure grass?

What costs millions of dollars but is worthless?

Second place in an election.

The circle is pretty smart. Did it go to college?

Are you kidding? It has 360 degrees!

Did you hear about the snail that got rid of its shell?

He thought it’d make him faster, but it just made him sluggish.

I Rule My Mind, Which I Alone Must Rule

The inmates are running the asylum. Every day, hour, minute the craziness and assaults on reason, compassion, common decency and mutual respect grow more egregious and are treated as the new normal. I, and those of you reading this, do not want that to continue. But what to do? To react with fear, anger and attack – to fight fire with fire – feels good for a moment, but ultimately only continues the downward spiral. So, what to do?

It’s kind of like taking scissors from a child, not exactly like, but kind of like. I take the scissors, not with hate and condemnation, but with loving common sense. (Oh, how I wish I could really do this!) The child is the ideals of compassion, inclusivity, the rule of law, mutual respect. The scissors are blame, name calling and fear. I want to act to take the scissors away without harming the child.

Each day, hour, and minute – whenever I become aware the craziness and assaults on reason, compassion, common decency and mutual respect grow more egregious, I can mindfully choose not to treat them as the new normal. Instead I can rule my mind, which I alone must rule and choose to be aware that the essence of all things is not in the thing itself but in the spirit behind the thing. I can respond to the provocation of the moment by choosing to go within and be guided in what to feel, say and do by mySelf, instead of myself.  I can also know that perhaps, all this nastiness is a long overdue shake out and things will return to a more descent normal after the elections in November.

Mindful Monday

Mindful Monday

Michael Neill, the super coach, wrote about being our authentic natural selves and the movie, Scaramouch, starring Stewart Granger. A hideously scarred actor makes his living playing a masked romantic clown by the name of Scaramouch. At some point, unbeknownst to the local police, his mask is taken over by a handsome political radical played by Granger.

Granger is able to function right under the noses of the police because they believe they know all about the hideous creature beneath the mask. In the same way, most of us have spent so long pretending to be whatever it is we’re pretending to be that any pretense of living from our true selves is long gone. We begin to make up a new story, one based on our underlying awareness that we’re not who we appear to be—that at any moment, we’ll be unmasked and found out as the hideous creature, phonies and frauds we are. The more energy we put into developing our mask, the more convinced we become that we really need one.

But what if we’re not hideous creatures, phonies and frauds? What if we’re good and kind and beautiful and don’t need masks? It’s scary to think about suddenly dropping our masks, so don’t. Instead, set an intention to be mindful of opportunities to set the mask aside. The more we do this, the less necessary the mask becomes.

Mindful Monday

“Am I a butterfly dreaming I’m a human being, or a human being dreaming I’m a butterfly?” Li Po

Perhaps identity is more fluid than our culture allows. Who am I, really? Am I spirit dreaming I’m a human being, or a human being dreaming I’m spirit? Is the power we call ‘God’ a body?

If I’m created in the image and likeness of that power, am I a body? How am I to live believing I’m body AND spirit? Which takes precedence? Is being a body enough? After  I’ve been fed, housed and clothed, what guides me – compassion, inclusion, respect or fear, loathing and blame? How shall I go about being fed, housed and clothed – struggling and fighting or revealing and sharing? What of the other human beings around me? Do they wonder and dream as I do?
