Prayer and Compassion Fatigue

Compassion fatigue seems to be a part of this holiday season. The unbelievable fires in California; the lingering aftermath of the hurricanes; the mass shootings; the suicide bombings in (thank God) other places. It seems wrong to celebrate the season of peace on earth and deny and ignore what’s going on. Yet, truth is, we don’t have to ignore what’s going on, nor deny our sorrow and compassion.

Whether we know and accept it or not, the power we call “God” is in, thru and as us.When we pray affirmatively – that means using the power we call “God”, feeling, connecting and being guided by it, when we claim it as ours, knowing it is there, too, with those that suffer, when we pray from that place of knowing, our experience of living changes and our compassion flows.

Affirmative prayer is not a prayer of petition, begging some super-natural power in the sky, not a ritualistic mantra, but a turning within, a wordless “Ahh” of gratitude, a sense of forgiveness and thankfulness; a gut knowing that paying it forward, being kind, gentle and compassionate and walking a mile (or even a few yards) in another’s shoes counts.

Such prayer is an affirmation of our own and everyone’s piece of the “God” power and a realization that our everyday thoughtfulness, good deeds and caring kindness matter, and will shift compassion fatigue to empathy and right action.

Mindful Monday

“If God is vast and boundless as the ocean, how can a tiny drop like man imagine what He knows?” Gandhi

Indeed. But still we must try. Right? We want to know, need to know, need the guidance. Yet any specific question involves a large number of assumptions which inevitably limit the answer. A specific question is actually a decision about the answer we want.

The purpose of words is to limit, and by limiting, make a vast area of experience more manageable. This is necessary for day-to-day living. But not for asking the power we call ‘God.’ This power – what Gandhi describes so beautifully as the boundless ocean, does not ‘speak.’ We know it within us by intuition, by gut feel and without fear for God is but love and therefore so am I (and you, and everyone and everything).

In the moments I truly know this, having gotten my fear and boated nothingness out of the way with prayer, meditation or mindfulness, I feel guided, guarded and protected; creative, compassionate and kind…even to myself.

We need to think of ourselves as part of the system, rather than apart, different or above it.

Where would we be without water? without the oceans? without the land that grows our food, the farmers that produce it, the truckers that deliver it, the roads and bridges they drive on?

We once thought the oceans too big to fail. Now they’re failing and with them the oxygen we need. Who cares if there’s no more tuna? We’ll just switch to the next fish. Soon, there’ll be no ‘nexts’ left….anywhere.

It needn’t be this way….

I get so embarrassed when I realize how arrogant I am, thinking I know what’s good for me, you and society, and understand how things actually work. For example, monkeys.

I was led to believe and believed, as you probably did, that human beings were the most intelligent beings on the planet. But Jane Goodall’s work shows chimpanzees make and use tools, greet each other with hugs and clasped hands, use language and comfort each other in times of grief. But then Goodall also found chimps organize and fight wars. So maybe they’re not so smart after all.

Mindful Monday

We’re only one thought away from a whole new experience of living.

This works because the mind projects thought onto consciousness. When the mind is still, no thought is projected and we are at peace. From this place of stillness and no thought we are open to a new thought. From this place comes innovation, creativity, intuition and wisdom. This place is the source of our experience. To get to this place, we only need to be mindful of our thinking and allow it to slow down and stop for an instant. No willpower or force; just allowing.

Our freedom and happiness have been restricted by a story we haven’t double checked – Alan Cohen

Imagine you found a diamond and, looking at it, mistakenly thought it a rhinestone. That doesn’t make it a rhinestone, it’s still a diamond. Where does the rhinestone exist? Your mind? Truth is it doesn’t exist. Never did. It was a false belief. When you realize it’s a diamond, what happened to the rhinestone? Nothing, because there never was a rhinestone.

Similarly, we can mistake conditions of fear, blame, lack and limitation for our reality, but like the rhinestone, they are not the truth of our being – we are the diamond. The moment we realize this, the false beliefs and stories begin to fade and our happiness and freedom expand. Thank you, Christian Sorenson, for the metaphor.

Mindful Monday

My wife and I do a brief prayer session in the morning, before we get into our day. Part of it involves invoking angels. Neither of us believe angels actually exist, but we find it’s good to remind ourselves of the qualities traditionally attributed to the various angels. Each day has its own angel. Today it’s Gabriel, Angel of Monday, Angel of the Moon.

“Today our thoughts dwell on our dreams, balance and beauty, protection and intuition. Today Gabriel develops our feminine forces and psychic abilities and we let them guide us; allowing our bad habits, fallen graces and lost loves to die, while opening all doors for us.”
